We just created our site and are creating a custom layout. Everything works as advertised, except that we cannot get our DKP menu to populate. The menu shows up, but there are no choices on it. As indicated in the documentation we used <!-- System:Menu KP --> to insert the menu. I assume that this is incorrect. Can I know the correct tag, please?

You are doing it right, but I went to check out your site, and if you go to Admin > "Menu Administration" you never enabled the DKP part of the site:

Wow...just checked it out. It's looking really nice. Not sure if you're done with it or not, but there's a wierd space between the menu and the image below each menu (in firefox).
